Welcome to the Sustain Transport website
Sustain Northern Rivers aims to
- reduce transport emissions
- increase transport options, and
- increase physical activity, social capital and resilience.
The Northern Rivers has high transport disadvantage. We have limited public transport and fragmented infrastructure for cycling and walking. This makes us very car-dependent, and our communities and industries are vulnerable to increases in fuel costs.
If we can burn less fossil fuel and more body fuel, not only will we reduce greenhouse emissions, but we’ll be more active, which means less chronic disease pressure on our hospitals…a win-win for our region.
Sustain Northern Rivers is conducting North Coast Commuter Mapping to address a lack of transport data in the region. Through an online commuter survey with 16 peak regional organisations including the 12 councils, we’ve been able to aggregate major commuter flows to Lismore, Tweed Heads, and Coffs Harbour, as well as produce commuting reports for participant organisations. This novel method of mapping commuter flows has been made possible by the collaborative pooling of resources and expertise, creating something ‘bigger than the sum of its parts”. The data will be used to generate strategies to increase commuting options to commuter hubs.
